About Young Women
Making It Work
Having identified, through various pieces
of research, that young women have been and continue to be
disadvantaged and excluded From the world of employment, Youth
Action Northern Ireland through the Development Partnership
Young Women Making It Work, aims to facilitate the access
and return to the labour market of young women from specific
target groups within Northern Ireland.
The specific groups that we have identified
are young mothers, young women travellers, young women with
disabilities, young lesbians, young minority ethnic women
and young 'status 0' women, and in particular, those from
rural communities.
Building on Youth Action's very successful
work within the Gender Equality Unit with young mothers, and
working in partnership with Disability Action, The Western
Education & Library Board, NICEM, The Derry Travellers
Support Group and Youth net, we will consult with these young
women before developing and eventually delivering accredited
tailor-made training programmes.
These programmes will incorporate personal,
vocational and educational skills empowering these young women
to challenge the many discriminations they face in their lives
and will also help to equip them with the skills necessary
to enter the labour market and/or access further training
opportunities.
We will also deliver accredited
programmes to employers, training providers, and community activists
to transfer skills and knowledge in appropriate methods of engaging
with the target groups.
